Abdollah Shafieezadeh named Lichtenstein Professor

Dr. Abdollah Shafieezadeh was named Lichtenstein Endowed Professor of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering on August 18, 2017.

Established in 1988, the Lichtenstein Professorship focuses on transportation infrastructure. Its endowment deed states that the Professor's research and teaching will "address the design, construction, maintenance and restoration of surface transportation systems including bridges, highways, railroads and historic structures.” Dr. Shafieezadeh’s areas of expertise include: Condition assessment of deteriorating bridges at component, bridge and network levels; High fidelity seismic risk analysis of distributed transportation systems; Smart control systems for bridges; Resilience quantification and enhancement of seaports; and, Risk-informed decision making for maintenance, rehabilitation, and replacement of bridges based on lifecycle cost.

The family of Abba G. Lichtenstein enthusiastically agreed with the new designation of the Lichtenstein Professorship, and the nomination of Dr. Shafieezadeh, saying “[we] fully agree that [Dr. Shafieezadeh’s expertise] fits perfectly with [our] Dad's interests and expertise. In a way, it seems to take some of his interests into the 21st century, both with the risks and the mechanisms to assess them."

Abba G. Lichtenstein, Ph.D., P.E., acclaimed for his efforts to restore and preserve historic bridges and founder of a New York-based consulting firm in his name, passed away on March 13, 2015.

He was a civil engineering graduate of The Ohio State University, which granted him an honorary doctorate of engineering in 1984.
