Pradel moderates panel discussion of levees

Daniel Pradel, Professor of Practice in Geotechnical Engineering, recently moderated a panel discussion on behalf of the American Society of Civil Engineeers (ASCE) Geo-Institute Embankment, Dams and Slope (EDS) Committee. The discussion, which took place on August 29, 2016 at ASCE's Washington, D.C. headquarters, addressed recent failures of levees in New Orleans and Japan and what lessons have been learned from these catastrophic events. Dr. Pradel is a new member of the faculty in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering. Previously, he served as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, as well as Vice President of Shannon & Wilson, Inc., a geotechnical and environmental consulting firm, in Glendale, California.

Professor Pradel is is a Fellow of ASCE and serves as an Associate Editor of the ASCE Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering. He possesses over 30 years of experience in the design of levees and dams and has assessed damage to structures caused by natural disasters throughout the world, including the 2011 Tohoku earthquake in Japan.
