Mariantonieta 'Mariant' Gutierrez Soto, Ph.D. candidate in Civil Engineering, has been awarded a Presidential Fellowship by the Graduate School at The Ohio State University. Under the advisement of Dr. Hojjat Adeli, Mariant researches intelligent resilient infrastructures. She hopes that this research "opens the pathways for investigation of the next generations of sustainable smart
structures that are significantly more resilient against natural disasters."

The Venezuela native has amassed an impressive record of academic achievement, scholarly investigation and university service at Ohio State. She is very passionate about the university's Discovery Themes initiative that, in her words, will enable "strong, research collaborations so that, together, we can solve some of the world’s complex problems".

Mariant previously served as a Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA) in the Department of Engineering Education for the First-Year Engineering Program. "Having Professor Adeli as a role model and being a GTA has ignited my passion towards a career in academia. Teaching, developing curriculum and mentoring students’ capstone-like projects have been truly, rewarding experiences" she states.

From Buck-I-Serv trips with Habitat for Humanity, to riding in Pelotonia, to serving as the Graduate Chair for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Mariant is grateful for her experiences in Columbus and beyond. She looks forward to her future as an academic, civil engineer and a Buckeye: "The breadth of knowledge and rich experiences that I have obtained while at The Ohio State University, has really opened my eyes to the role of civil engineering in the world. It has shown me just how vital the role of educating the next generation of engineers is."
