The department is pleased to welcome Dr. Michael J. Hagenberger as Associate Professor of Practice in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering at the Ohio State University.

Hagenberger received a BSCE from Bucknell University and M.Eng in civil engineering from Cornell University. He then went to work in industry in the NYC metropolitan region as a structural engineer and project manager.  Dr. Hagenberger was involved in the design and construction phases of large scale commercial projects including prominent convention centers, high rise buildings, museums, arenas, and stadiums. His project experience includes the Baltimore Convention Center (Baltimore, MD), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Cleveland, OH), the 1993 World Trade Center reconstruction and structural integrity inspections (New York, NY), the Excel Energy Center (St. Paul, MN), PNC Arena (Raleigh, NC), and the Bi-Lo Center (Greenville, SC).  Dr. Hagenberger continued his academic pursuits in 1999 at the University of Texas at Austin where he earned a Ph.D. in 2004. The following ten years were spent as a faculty member at Valparaiso University (Valparaiso, IN) where he served as chair from 2008 to 2014 before joining the faculty at the Ohio State University.

Dr. Hagenberger’s technical and pedagogical interests are:

  • Design and construction of steel and reinforced concrete structures
  • Load rating and structural assessment of prestressed concrete bridges
  • Development and implementation of first-year engineering programs
  • Development and implementation of capstone (senior design) courses
  • Methods for teaching and integrating design in undergraduate engineering courses

Dr. Hagenberger is a member of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), and American Society of Engineering Educators (ASEE). He also volunteers as a program evaluator for ABET.

He will be teaching CE 4350 (Reinforced Concrete Design), CE 5820 (Construction Estimating) and he will be assisting with CE 4000.01/.02 (Capstone Design).
