Environmental Engineering Capstone

Students in the Environmental Engineering Capstone/First-Year Honors Cornerstone are either about to graduate or are part of the First-Year Honors Program in Engineering.  The top student group presented their final project to Ohio EPA and the City of Columbus Department of Public Utilities on April 22nd.  The top team was Holly Lorton, Brad Marzola, Kris Roser and Maggie Wilson.

The final product is a result of fourteen weeks of hard work and dedication from the students and consists of a preliminary design report and presentation.  The seniors brought to the team the knowledge they learned in their classes, which is the point of a capstone experience, and combined it with a real-world problem.  The first-year students acted as interns with the seniors maintaining the responsibility to explain information to first-year students.  Each week students had a submittal related to the lecture topic.  The final presentation was a compilation of the submittals brought together as a preliminary design report.  This year’s topic, ozone and biologically active carbon filtration at the Dublin Road Water Plant is a current work in progress by practicing engineers.

Thanks to the many practicing engineers from the City of Columbus Department of Public Utilities, Ohio EPA and CH2M-Hill for assistance with the course. We would like to send a special thank you to Tim Wolfe from MWH Americas who has been involved with this project for many years.  Tim received the Dean's Meritorious Service to Students Award from the College of Engineering for his efforts in 2010.  However, this award does not reflect the time, energy, and care he has shown to these students and for helping to make this experience possible.
