Underground Nuclear Tests Detected in the Skies

Posted:

Even when they're underground, nuclear tests can be detected in the skies—and as a result, global satellite networks could become a powerful new tool in the arsenal of weapons to help detect clandestine underground nuclear explosions. Some interesting things have been happening at the SPIN Lab in collaboration with the School of Earth Sciences and the Naval Research Lab. The newest findings on detecting clandestine nuclear explosions using GPS and VLA (another space-based method) were presented recently at the American Geophysical Union (AGU)  press conference, “An Unlikely New Tool for Spotting Clandestine Nuclear Tests,” held Tuesday, December 4, 2012.  Slides presented at the press conference can be found here.
