ASCE 11th Annual Career Day

Posted:

The Central Ohio Section of ASCE held their 11th annual Civil Engineering Career Day on April 20, 2011. There were 14 high school juniors from different schools throughout central Ohio.

The day began at the OSU Medical Center with representatives from Turner-Bovis Lend Lease who described the ProjectONE construction project. Over lunch at the OSU 4-H building, Dr. Carolyn Merry (OSU) and Dr. Ken Walsh (Ohio University) presented information about careers in civil engineering and a typical civil engineering curriculum.

A tour of the 4-H "green" building showed aspects of sustainability in building construction. The afternoon included a site visit to the West Main Street Bridge Project in Westerville that the Franklin County Engineers Office is completing. Jim Pajk and Mike Bashore provided a description of the bridge construction project. The students provided positive feedback about their experience and their exposure to civil engineering.
