Great Lakes Traffic Bowl Competition

Posted:

Connor Bailey, John Braunschweiger, and Donatus Weithman proudly represented civil engineering at the 2011 Great Lakes Traffic Bowl Competition.  The competition was held on Thursday, April 14th and produced by the Great Lakes District Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) in conjunction with its annual meeting.

Not only did the team take first place in the division competition, they presented a very fine impression of our department and Ohio State.  They competed against the University of Dayton and Western Michigan University for the win.  The competition is open to graduate and undergraduate students.  Connor, John, and Donatus are civil engineering undergraduate students specializing in transportation.

The competition was in a "Jeopardy" format where answers were provided and the team had to ring in with the questions.  The topics covered transportation concepts, verbiage and infrastructure.  The OSU team took the lead in the "single jeopardy" round and carried that lead through to the end of the "double jeopardy" round.  They sealed the win with the correct answer to the "final jeopardy" question.

Professor McCord, was contacted by ITE representatives several months ago and encouraged to participate in this competition since the Great Lakes meeting was being held in the Columbus area.  Dr. Croft and Dr. McCord starting talking to the students in their classes and eventually formed the winning team.

Each team for the ITE Collegiate Traffic Bowl consisted of three (3) students from the same university. They must be full-time students, a member of ITE International and their school’s student  chapter, and not yet 27 years old on the date of their district’s competition.

The Ohio State team is now eligible to compete in the Grand Championship to be held at the ITE International Annual Meeting and Exhibit from August 13-16, 2011 in St. Louis, Missouri. The winning team at the 2011 Grand Championship will receive $2,000.

Congratulations to Connor, John and Donatus along with Professor Croft and Professor McCord.  Thank you for representing the department and university in such grand style!
