Graduate Student Travel Scholarships

presenter_pic.jpg
Each year, the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering provides travel scholarships to support graduate students presenting their research at professional conferences in their area of specialty. These funds come through departmental accounts including the Bedford Scholarship Fund. This solicitation will typically be sent to the faculty at the beginning of each term and will be posted on the departmental website.

Students must be nominated by their faculty advisor (typically by email from the advisor's email account) with the following materials sent to the scholarship committee: Benn Coifman (coifman.1@osu.edu) and Andy May (may.561@osu.edu):

  • A letter of acceptance from the conference organizing committee (or for pending conferences, a copy of the call for papers/talks)
  • The student’s current CV
  • A letter of support from the advisor (or another faculty sponsor)
  • A completed nomination worksheet (Download worksheet HERE)

Multiple applications from the faculty advisor (e.g., multiple students attending the same conference, one student attending multiple conferences) must be ranked by priority. The committee will aim to distribute funds across multiple advisors, but depending on demand, there may be sufficient funds to support a second student or second conference.

The available funds will be distributed between fall, spring and summer terms. Applications can be submitted at any time; however, the committee will typically start considering nominations at the start of the third week of the term, and the process will remain on-going until the available funds for that term have been allocated.

Note that the talk/paper does not need to be accepted at the time of application (i.e., nominations will be accepted for submissions that are in preparation and/or under review). This will allow the scholarship committee to anticipate needs throughout the year and reserve funding for conferences that occur late in the term. However, any reserved funds will only be awarded on condition of a letter of acceptance from the conference organizing committee.

For the 2016-17 academic year, it is anticipated that there will be approximately eight $500 awards. The awards will only cover reimbursable expenses and as noted below, the advisor is expected to cover any remaining travel expenses. Furthermore, an award for a given nomination cannot be used in conjunction with another OSU-sponsored travel scholarship.

Eligibility requirements:

  • The nominee must be a current graduate student in Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering at the time of the conference.
  • The nominee must be attending the conference to present their own work.
  • The advisor/faculty sponsor is expected to cover the remaining registration and travel expenses from their own research or departmental accounts.
  • The nominee will not use any other OSU sponsored scholarship to attend the given conference.

Please contact members of the committee with any questions regarding this process (not the CEG Grad Studies Chair or Grad Studies Coordinator).
