Assistant Professor, Structures

Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering, College of Engineering

The Ohio State University, Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track position in the field of Structural Engineering. The position is anticipated to be filled at the assistant professor level, however associate or full professor-level appointments will be considered for outstanding candidates. Fundamental knowledge in structural engineering or closely related disciplines is expected. The scholarship, innovation, skills and promise of candidates are more important than specific research expertise; however, research areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to: structural assessment and design against man-made and natural hazards such as earthquakes and hurricanes, sustainable design of buildings, bridges or other structures, structural health monitoring, green buildings, sustainability of large-scale built systems and interactions of such systems with large-scale hazards, use of advanced materials for design of new structures and retrofit of existing structures, structural degradation due to aging and other effects and design and life-cycle analysis of materials and structures. The department, college, and university are making significant investments in the fields of sustainability and resilience in support of affirming OSU as a global leader in these fields. Thus, a strong potential to collaborate within the department and across the university is desirable.

The successful candidate is expected to: develop an active research program, effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering, supervise and mentor graduate students, be involved in service within the department, across the university, and in appropriate professional communities. The Department recently added a large number of faculty members, including two new faculty members in the areas of concrete materials and structures last year, and has an ambitious plan to continue growing. Faculty members support ABET-accredited degree programs in Civil and Environmental Engineering, more than 100 graduate and 600 undergraduate students, and numerous funded multidisciplinary research programs (see ceg.osu.edu for more information about the department). An earned doctoral degree in civil engineering or a closely related field is required prior to the anticipated start date of August 2017.
