Faculty Advisors

When will I be assigned a Faculty Advisor?

All students will be assigned a Faculty Advisor upon admission to the Civil or Environmental Engineering major. Your Faculty Advisor will also be identifed on your My Student Center page.

What is the role of my Faculty Advisor?

Your Faculty Advisor will guide you in selecting the Technical Elective courses that best compliment both your academic and career goals. Faculty advisors typcially specialize in a more centralized area within Engineering and can provide guidance toward your professional development within Engineering. Faculty Advisors can serve as a great resource for students in regards to offering career advice, research opportunities and learning more about graduate school.

When should I meet with my Faculty Advisor?

Students are encouraged to meet with their Faculty Advisors as needed to help build a professional relationship, but you will be required to meet with your Faculty Advisor at least three times before graduation. The first meeting will take place by the end of your second term in the major. During this meeting you will discuss your academic and professional goals, as well as potential technical elective courses. During your second meeting, typically during your third term after being admitted to the major, you will finalize and submit a signed Technical Elective Approval Form upon completion of this meeting. After submitting your Technical Elective Approval Form to the Advising Office, you should schedule a follow-up meeting with your Faculty Advisor to review your course selection and make changes if needed. The third meeting to take place will actually involve preparing for graduation. You will be required to review your Application for Graduation with your Faculty Advisor prior to submitting it for approval.

How is my Faculty Advisor different than my Academic Advisor?

Your Academic Advisor will assist you with the procedural aspects of being a student within the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University. For example, an Academic Advisor will provide support to students for things such as adding and dropping classes, applying to the major, the graduation process, and providing information in regards to the various campus resources and services that are available. Think of it as having two advisors who are here to assist you in working towards the completion of your degree!
