BS Civil Engineering Admission to Major
Thank you for your interest in the civil engineering program at The Ohio State University. Students interested in applying for admission to the University must apply through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
Current OSU students interested in the civil engineering major and who meet the requirements for admission to the major (see below) must submit a formal application to the Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering Advising Office in Room 495 of Hitchcock Hall (HI) by the following deadlines for consideration:
- Applications must be submitted by 4pm on the 5th Friday of Autumn term for Spring admission
- Applications must be submitted by 4pm on the 5th Friday of Spring term for Autumn admission
Requirements for Admission:
Students must have successfully completed or be currently enrolled the term of application in all prerequisite courses for admission to the major. In order to be considered for admission to the civil engineering major, students must meet the minimum GPA requirements at the time of application and once all courses required for admission have been completed. The student's OSU Cumulative Point Hour Ratio (CPHR) and Eligibility Point Hour Ratio (EPHR) must both be at 2.0 or higher for consideration. CPHR is calculated from all courses taken at OSU. EPHR* is calculated from all the courses required for admission to the major, excluding Engineering 1100 and English 1110.
Courses required for admission to the major are as follows:
Math 1151 or 1161, 1172 (or Math 1151, 1152, 2153)
Engineering 1100 (or any OSU survey class)
Engineering 1181, 1182 (or Engineering 1281, 1282; or 1188, 1186, 1187)
Physics 1250, 1251 (or Physics 1260, 1261)
English 1110.xx
Acceptable courses for admission through the quarter-to-semester transition can be found here.
*If a student has taken more than 50% of the credit hours factored into the EPHR from an institution other than OSU, grades earned in those classes will be factored into the EPHR for admission to major purposes.
Submitting your Application:
Please submit the following materials to 495 Hitchcock Hall by the appropriate deadline for admission consideration.
*Your degree audit can be found on Buckeye Link or from your My Student Center. If using Buckeye Link, select Degree Audit under the Enrollment and Academic History section. If using your Student Center page, select darsweb. If you are not currently a pre-civil engineering student, please run a degree audit using the manual tabs for the Civil Engineering major. Please make sure to open all sections.
You will need to know your CPHR and EPHR in order to fill out the application form and both can be found on your DARS. CPHR is located in the General Graduation Requirements and EPHR is located in the Standards of Academic Performance section.
