Academic Advising

How can I meet with an Academic Advisor in Civil or Environmental Engineering?

The Academic Advising office has a variety of ways to meet with students or address their needs/concerns via email.  Please visit the Academic Advising page for more information

I am enrolled in another pre-major/major program within the College of Engineering and am interested in switching to Civil or Environmental Engineering. How can I change my pre-major/major?

Please make an appointment with a CEG Advisor to discuss changing your program.

I am not enrolled in the College of Engineering but am interested in majoring in Civil or Environmental Engineering. How can I switch to Engineering?

In order to switch to the pre-Civil or pre-Environmental program from outside the College of Engineering, we require students to have successfully completed Math 1151 (or its equivalents with a grade of C- or higher),  AND  Physics 1250 OR  Chemistry 1210 OR Chemistry 1250. Students must also have a CPHR of 2.5 or higher. Please make an appointment with a CEG Advisor to discuss changing your program.

What are CPHR, EPHR, & MPHR, and where can I find them?

Each point hour ratio (PHR), frequently known as GPA, is calculated from the applicable courses listed below (except those which fall under the Freshman Forgiveness Rule). You can find each PHR in your Degree Audit Report near the top.

CPHR- Cumulative point hour ratio is calculated from all the courses you have taken at OSU for a grade
EPHR - Eligibility point hour ratio is calculated from all the courses required for admission to the major
MPHR- Major point hour ratio is calculated from all core courses, core electives,  technical electives for the major

What is Freshman Forgiveness? Are there other grade forgiveness options?

Effective Autumn semester 2015, under Ohio State's recently approved Grade Forgiveness Rule, students can petition to complete a second attempt at a course and apply grade forgiveness to the first attempt. The parameters of the Grade Forgiveness Rule are as follows:

  • Students must submit a Grade Forgiveness Rule Petition to their academic advisor no later than the second Friday of the term in which the student is enrolled in the second attempt of a course.
  • Students seeking to repeat a high-demand course in which they have already earned a passing grade may not receive permission to repeat it until students who truly need to take the course have had a chance to enroll.
  • If approved, the first attempt's grade and credit hours will be removed from the OSU CPHR (cumulative point-hour ratio) upon completion of the second attempt.
  • To apply forgiveness, the first attempt of the course must be graded at OSU. Course credit earned via credit by examination (EM) or transfer credit (K) is considered a first attempt; however, these attempts were not graded at OSU. As such, students who earn EM or K credit for a course (first attempt) and then choose to take it again at Ohio State (second attempt) may not apply forgiveness to the second attempt by completing a third attempt.
  • Forgiveness only impacts the OSU cumulative GPA calculation. All grades remain on the student's transcript.
  • Academic standing is not retroactively reviewed if a first attempt's grade is removed from the GPA calculation due to forgiveness.
  • For students admitted to Ohio State Autumn 2015 and later, a maximum of three courses can be repeated under this arrangement. Students who were admitted to Ohio State Summer 2015 or earlier should review the information below to determine their eligibility.

Information for Students Admitted to OSU Summer 2015 or Earlier

The Grade Forgiveness Rule replaces the Freshman Forgiveness Rule. The new Grade Forgiveness Rule no longer limits "forgiveness" to course work taken during the first year of college-level work, and the repetition no longer needs to be completed during the second year.

Eligibility

You may not apply the Grade Forgiveness Rule retroactively to courses you have repeated Summer 2015 or earlier.

If you have not applied forgiveness to any courses under the Freshman Forgiveness Rule, you are eligible to petition up to three courses under the Grade Forgiveness Rule.

If you have already applied 15 credit hours of forgiveness under the Freshman Forgiveness Rule, you are not eligible for any additional forgiveness under the Grade Forgiveness Rule. You may not request to cancel any previously applied forgiveness in order to gain eligibility under the Grade Forgiveness Rule

If you applied forgiveness under the Freshman Forgiveness Rule to only one course previously and want to utilize the new Grade Forgiveness Rule, you are eligible to apply it to up to two courses in the future.

If you applied foregiveness under the Freshman Foregiveness Rule to only two courses previously and want to utilize the new Grade Forgiveness Rule, you are eligible to apply it to one course in the future.

If you applied forgiveness under the Freshman Forgiveness Rule to three courses previously, you are not eligible to apply forgiveness with the new Grade Forgiveness Rule to any courses. However, if you still have any remaining hours under the Freshman Forgiveness Rule and want to use forgiveness under the previous rule's parameters, you are permitted to do so through Spring 2016.

The parameters of the Freshman Forgiveness Rule are as follows:

  • The final grade in first attempt of course is less than a C-.
  • The first attempt is completed prior to the student earning his/her 29th college credit hour, excluding credit by examination and including transfer credit earned at another institution.
  • The second attempt must be completed prior to the student earning his/her 59th college credit hour, or by Spring 2016, whichever is earliest.
  • If forgiveness is applied, the first attempt's grade and credit hours are removed from the student's OSU CPHR (cumulative point-hour ratio) calculation.
  • Both grades, including those for which "forgiveness" was applied, remain on the transcript.
  • Students repeating a course in a sequence or a course that is a prerequisite to another course should complete the repetition before advancing to the next course.
  • A maximum of 15 hours of forgiveness can be applied.
  • Forgiveness can only be applied to a course once.
  • For the purpose of the rule, a grade of "EN" will be considered the same as a grade of "E."
  • The repeated course must be taken for a letter grade (not as pass/non-pass).
  • Forgiveness under the Freshman Forgiveness Rule will only be applied through Spring 2016.
  • Once requested and approved, application of forgiveness cannot be canceled.

What are the requirements to be admitted to the Civil or Environmental Engineering majors?

Students can apply to the major once they have completed or are currently enrolled in all the prerequisites for admission into the major. Course requirements are different for the Civil Engineering major and the Environmental Engineering major. Course requirements for admission to the major also differ depending on which term you apply. For a list of these required courses see the CEG website under the Admissions tab. To be considered for admission, students must also have a CPHR of at least 2.0 and an EPHR of at least a 2.5. You do not need to be pre-civil or pre-environmental in order to apply for the respective majors.

How do I apply to the Civil or Environmental Engineering majors?

Please refer to the CEG website Application to Major section for the pre-requisites, application, instructions and deadlines as application materials and processes are subject to change.
