Institute of Navigation Graduate Student Award

Andrew Zaydak, a PhD student in Geodetic Engineering, co-advised by Prof. Dorota Brzezinska and Dr. Charles Toth, is the 2013 recipient of the Institute of Navigation (ION) Graduate Student Award.

The ION is a nonprofit professional society dedicated to the advancement of the art and science of navigation. Although a national organization, its membership is worldwide, and it is affiliated with the International Association of Institutes of Navigation. The award recipient must demonstrate excellence in research in the art and science of navigation in the form of (a) an established record of published journal or proceedings papers, or (b) exceptional MS or PhD research work or completed dissertation, or (c) exceptional presentation at a professional meeting. The award consists of a plaque and a check for $2,000.

Andrew  has already published and presented his research  at ION meetings, and is  currently completing a summer internship with Yotta Navigation Corporation and The Office of Naval Research, who sponsor his PhD research.  He is working with the R&D team on designing, implementing, and testing a non-GPS based underwater navigation and communication system for teams of underwater scuba divers.
