2010 OSU Steel Bridge Team

Posted:

The OSU Steel Bridge Team placed 3rd in the Ohio Valley Regional Competition held in April, qualifying them to attend the National Student Steel Bridge Competition that was held at Purdue University on May 28-29, 2010. The goal of the national competition is to design and erect a steel bridge. Students construct the bridge at the competition and are judged on construction speed (time plus any penalties), lightness (weight of the bridge), display (tie-breaker for all categories and includes the appearance of the bridge and the poster describing the bridge design), stiffness (deflection), construction economy (number of builders times the time of construction), and efficiency (weight of the bridge times the defection). The team of 12 OSU students attended the national competition and had a great time[ibimage==210==standard_large==none==self==ibimage_Right]. Four OSU students assembled the bridge, which weighed 251 lbs (24th) in 11.03 minutes (24th). Their steel bridge display ranked 21st. After loading 2500 lbs, the bridge deflected 1.96 in. (38th). Overall, the OSU Steel Bridge placed 31 out of 46 bridges.
